The IUCN WCPA Urban Conservation Strategies Specialist Group is part of the World Commission on Protected Areas of IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The Specialist Group works to strengthen the ability of the protected areas community to serve urban people, urban places, and urban institutions
. It does so in cooperation with other parts of IUCN and the broader nature conservation community.

2018 goals:

  • Help implement an IUCN Resolution    sponsored by the specialist group that encourages IUCN and the international conservation community generally to give more attention to urban matters (see box at right).
  • Publicize Urban Protected Areas, a volume in IUCN's Best Practice Protected Area Guidelines Series; arrange for more translations.
  • Encourage cooperation between urban protected areas and museums and similar institutions. See progress here.
  • Make the case for dark-sky protected areas and other means of protecting nature from artificial light.
  • Protect natural and cultural soundscapes in protected areas.

New: The IUCN Urban Alliance

Bringing together IUCN member organizations, partners, and units of IUCN's Commissions and Secretariat active in urban conservation, the IUCN Urban Alliance was called for in a Resolution passed at the World Conservation Congress in September 2016.

The IUCN Council has set up a task force to implement the Resolution.

Further progress in organizing the Alliance will be reported on this page.
